Domain Name Extension

Domain names, are varied and signify a certain top level domain address which helps in classification of the website and its eventual registry in the directory. As such these names are basically the one identifying feature of the address of the website and are further translated into IP addresses by the use of a domain name system. As such, it further becomes important as the name of the domain and the text that users will have to put in, in order to reach the website. As such, these names are to be registered carefully and will be accompanied by a suffix of a specific kind. This suffix is a definition of the nature of the website and helps in defining which category the website belongs to.

The various suffixes used are:

  • .com- Commercial Businesses
  • .net- network sites
  • .gov- Governmental sites
  • .org- non- profit businesses
  • .mil- military sites
  • .edu- education institutions

There are also several suffixes which mark the country the domain is registered in. Regardless of the website, it will be registered under one of these top level domains. There are various suffixes that are country and even area specific.

Once the domain name is fixed, it has to then be converted to an IP address that the internet can understand. As such, this involves the use of a domain name system, which can convert the address name into a series of numbers and decimals which are understood clearly by the servers. The top level domains are also called as generic domains and are of two different types.

Unsponsored TLDs: These have no sponsorship from any one fixed group and hold all the major suffices such as .com, .net, .biz and .org.

Sponsored TLDs: These are formed by a local community and have sponsorship provided. They can be unique and can have their own set of rules and dispute solving machinery.

All the domain names have to be registered with a registrar after completing a series of technical and legal formalities. Each registrar is connected to a core directory known as the registry, where the website will have to be registered in order to functionalize it. The registry is controlled by operators who will direct traffic to and from the domain and maintain all the listings in the domain.

Correct registration and domain names, are essential for setting up the website without which it may not work at all. As such the complete process can be found online across a variety of guides and websites and people can also use these pages to find a listed registrar and register their domain names accordingly. There are several pages which show the complete list of all registrars and also the lit of available domain names.
